Markham writes very poetically about being awaken to the living world. He also discusses letters and clippings from San Jose telling of an avent of god in their merdian and he will serve George when he is commanded. Letter is unsigned.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
